“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”

Matthew 5:13 -14

ABOUT US

HeronBridge Community Church is multi-cultural and non-denominational church which strives to be a spiritual home for believers of Jesus Christ. As a church we are committed to building a family of people who will love, reach and transform the community around them. Furthermore, as a body of people committed to God’s Word, we strive to be a people who look up towards Him for guidance, look in as we strive to be more Christ-like and look out as we aim to influence our surroundings for the sake of the Gospel.

Our Elders are responsible and accountable to God, for the affairs – both spiritual and temporal – of HeronBridge Community Church. Our Ministry Leaders are inclusively responsible for decision making and leadership within their areas of ministry. The EXCO Elders are responsible for decision making around church matters as well as the smooth running of the church.

As a member of our church family, we also believe that you have a say in church matters and so we employ and believe in a congregational involvement in HeronBridge’s Church life.

OUR MISSION

we are salt and light.

“You are the salt of the earth”… “You are the light of the world”…Matthew 5:13-15

HeronBridge Community Church exists to be salt – to bring cleansing and to halt decay, to be a purifying influence in the world. We also exist to be the light of Christ, shining in the darkness and driving back the darkness wherever we are. As a community, we are a city on a hill that cannot be hidden (Matt.5:14).

With this as the reason for our existence, everything else we do flows from it – everything we do as a church is in order to be salt and light, both as individual Christians as we “go” about our daily business and also as a church community that impacts and influences the communities around us.

OUR VISION

We see HeronBridge Community Church equipped through the Word, bearing fruit in every good work, transforming our community and beyond for Christ.

“Equipped through the Word”

We recognise that the Bible is God’s special revelation to us and that all scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that all God’s people may be thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Tim. 3:16).

As such, we place a high value on being a Biblically based community of believers, emphasising solid Biblical teaching aimed at equipping every member, irrespective of where they may be in their personal spiritual journey.

“For Christ”

Christ is our centre, our focus, our all – in him we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28). Our very existence as a church is premised on the centrality of Christ. Thus, everything we do as a church, is for Christ and for the glory of his name.

“Bearing fruit in every good work”

This is an echo of Paul’s prayer for the Colossian church in Col. 1:10 “so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God…”

We want to see every member bearing lasting fruit (John 15:16) that will lead to spiritual growth and maturity. Based on Eph. 2:10 we recognize that we are created in Christ to do good works, which God has prepared in advance for us to do. As a community of believers, we want to be obedient and faithful in fulfilling God’s purposes in and through us, doing those works that He has prepared for us to do, and see those works producing fruit.

“Transforming our community”

We recognize that we exist as God’s chosen vehicle to bring transformation on this earth (Eph. 3:10). This ties in with our mission to be salt and light. It is only as we are truly salt and light that our existence will impact the communities where we are active.

This also recognizes that we exist not for ourselves, our own edification, or to be blessed, but like Christ who did not come to be served, but to serve (Mark 10:45), we exist for His purpose in serving others and bringing transformation in the process.

By communities we mean those where we can most impactfully be engaged, such as the HeronBridge College community, Diepsloot, Lanseria, etc. As individuals, our communities are wherever we live, work and play.

“And beyond”

We expect HCC to impact the communities in close proximity to where we regularly meet and where our members regularly find themselves. However, in recognizing Christ’s call to be his witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8), we want to be part of what God is doing in other parts of our country, continent and world.

As such we want to be intentional about cross-cultural missions in all its facets, recognizing that there are members in our midst whom God has called to go beyond. As a church, we want to be open to identifying, equipping, sending and supporting those whom God has specifically and uniquely called.

OUR VALUES

Our values are our shared Christian beliefs and ideals. They communicate what is important to us. They underly everything we do as a community of believers and they form the basis of our mission and vision. They remind us of who we are, help us to determine strategies and help us to stay on course.

Christ-centered

Jesus is the Son of God and he is our Lord and Saviour. He is central to our faith and how we live that out as a church. Everything we believe and do flows out of the centrality of Jesus Christ.

Active engagement

We believe in the priesthood of all believers, that everyone has a role and a function in the Body. We reject the clergy-laity divide and recognize that God has called everyone of us to be present, engaged and active in every aspect of the church’s life.

Caring

We provide physical, spiritual and emotional care for one another within the church community and we extend that care beyond ourselves to others who are not necessarily part of our Christian community.

Diversity

We are intentional about creating space/opportunity for people of all colours, ethnicities and genders to be part of us and to be involved in meaningful ministry. We do not discriminate against anyone, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.

Humility

We are one in Christ. Not one of us is more important, more significant or of higher ‘rank’ than any other. Our humility encourages active participation by all. It also fosters a spirit of generosity and non-materialism.

Inclusivity

As a community of Christ followers, we want to be radically inclusive, as Jesus was. We accept all people. We are family. We are welcoming and friendly, engendering a sense of belonging. We are informal and we have fun.
